Homeward toward Beauty

Homeward toward Beauty

It is a cold rainy Monday night and I am not in the mood to write anything. I was reading this evening the book "Edwards In Our Time: Jonathan Edwards And The Shaping Of American Religion" Edited by Sang Hyun Lee & Allen C. Guelzo and came across this in the essay titled 'Religious Ethics Today: Jonathan Edwards, H. Richard Niebuhr, and Beyond' written by Roland A. Delattre "The journey of discovery and transformation that begins in the homeward turn toward beauty is a social as well as a personal journey. It is a witness of Scripture and of Christian faith that the life of God is social and relational. That is one reason most Christians find it necessary to speak of God in trinitarian terms, however much trouble that may have with the doctrinal formulations of the Trinity. Participation in the divine life is therefore also a social and relational life. Indeed I doubt that it can be sustained without the spiritual nourishment made possible by a worshipping and celebrating community. The give and take, the challenge and support, the mutual nourishment in the ways of love and justice among differing but kindred minds, the reverence expressed and nourished in corporate worship as well as the ways of prayer and meditation-this fabric of corporate piety and celebration is an indispensable condition of a Christian life." pg.77
