glorycloud's Diaryland Diary ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- all flesh shall see the salvation of God "The Prophecy Of Isaiah Fulfilled. Martin Bucer: In this passage, Isaiah prophesies of the preaching of the gospel, which would be begun by John but not finished. The prophet includes this under the type of deliverance made by Cyrus. And so he writes, "Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for. . . A voice of one calling: 'In the desert prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the wilderness a highway for our God.'" The sense and meaning of the words of the prophet are this: O chosen and true Isralites, he shall give the command to his preachers to preach a new consolation and the gospel of grace, that your hearts may be filled with courage and be joyful. He shall command them also to shout forth with a loud voice that the time is fulfilled in which he must fight with all kinds of evil, that iniquity is forgiven and pardoned, after he has received sufficient correction for all his sins. And shortly, the voice which is the proclaimer of felicity shall be heard crying out in the wilderness, that is to say, among the people of Israel who are devoid of all piety. It shall exhort all people to prepare the way of the Lord and to make the path straight for our God; that is to say, they should put away all false religion and other sins, and all ridiculous trust in the law and in human reason, and receive the obedience of the Word of God and faith in Christ. By means every valley shall be exalted and every hill brought low; that is to say, whatever shall be inconvenient or in the Lord's way will be removed. Human traditions which are against the Word of God will be condemned, trust in works will fail, pride in reason will be forsaken, the flesh with it vices and concupiscence will be crucified and people will repent and be renewed. Then the glory of the Lord will be revealed by the gospel throughout the whole world, and all flesh, that is to say, all mortal beings, will see, acknowledging by true faith that the mouth of the Lord has spoken the truth. They will see the Messiah offered to them by whom God has appointed salvation for all humankind.
