last Sunday of 2002

last Sunday of 2002

I am waiting to eat dinner on a cold Sunday afternoon. I am tired and feel like sleeping all afternoon. But I got to type out my June 28 1989 Sunday School class on the history of Old Testament Israel.

This morning Carol, Josiah and I went to church. We left here at 9:05 AM and were home by 11:15 AM. Bethany had left for church with a girlfriend. Since coming home from church I have done nothing. I can not remember what I have done since coming home from church. My mind is blank. I do remember messing with the computer. I read this morning before the worship service from the book "Introduction To Old Testament Theology: A Canonical Approach" by John H. Sailhamer. I now remember that when we got home from church I looked up something in the book "Jesus According To Scripture: Restoring the Portrait from the Gospels" by Darrell L. Bock. This morning the minister preached from the Gospel of Mark chapter 8 verses 31-33 and I wanted to read what Bock wrote on these verses. "And He began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again. He spoke this word openly. Then Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him. But when He had turned around and looked at His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying, "Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." So I read Bock to my wife as she cooked the afternoon meal. Josiah right now is laying on the couch reading a novel. Existence keeps flowing by. I will close to eat and then try to type out my 1989 Adult Sunday school notes on the history of OT Israel.

"So when they had appointed him a day, many came to him at his lodging, to whom he explained and solemnly testified of the kingdom of God, persuading them concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and the Prophets, from morning till evening" Acts 28:23

THE CONQUEST

We read in the Book of Deuternomy and Joshua of the Conquest of the land of Canaan. After Moses died outside the Land Joshua became the leader of the Israelities. It was under Joshua's leadership that the Isrealities conquered the land of Canaan-Read Joshua 1:1-9. Always remember that God had promised the Land to the seed of Abraham and under Joshua we begin to see a fulfillment of the promises-verse 6 "Be strong and courageous, for you shall give this people possession of the land which I swore to their fathers to give them."

Read the article 'Conquest and Allotment of the Land' in volume 1 "Baker Encyclopedia of the Bible" pp. 172-177

"The fifth typical dispensation of providence we proposed to examine is the entrance into Canaan, under the guidence of he same Joshua who led them through the waters of Jordan. This history is the principle subject of the book of Joshua, and its spiritual application is sufficiently plain. Canaan was a type of Heaven-the rest of the promised land significant of our rest in Heaven; as we have already considered in speaking of the personal types . . ." pg.143 "The Gospel of the Old Testament" Samuel Mather

Read Samuel Mather's comments on Joshua being a type of Christ pp.97,98

"The third typical representation was the passage through the wilderness, the wild deserts of Arabia, God being at their head. Psalm lxviii. 7,-typical, beyond a doubt, of the believers passage through an unregenerated world: some think also, of his passage through his own unregenerated state: the former is more ostensible. "Through many temptations we must enter into the kingdom of heaven." Acts xvii. 22. The difficulties and terrors of that desert have their likeness in this world's wilderness, in internal trials at least, and often external ones. But above all there is a similitude between the temptations, transgressions and rebellions of that people, and the struggles of remaining sin in the heart of the believer. Who in reading the narrative, especially in the language of the Psalmist, does not find in it his own sins, his own mercies, his faithlessness, unbelief and earthly mindedness, contrasted with God's goodness and endurance; intermixed with most deserved chastisements and reproofs? The Apostle recognizes this type, 1 Cor. x., and indeed it is so fit a one, it is impossible to read it, and not make the application to ourselves in every line; not to feel that we are reading our own spiritual history. There is in it, besides a more fatal lesson, that must not be disregarded. The perishing of many souls under the preparative initiatory work, is plainly here set forth: for through Israel as people reached the promised land, many individuals perished in transitu between Egypt and Canaan. The Apostle applies it thus, "Lest any man fall short after the same example of unbelief." Heb. iv. 11. "Many of them were destroyed in the wilderness." 1 Cor. x.5. There are emotions, stirrings of desire, convictions of the understanding, fears perhaps, which induce many persons to set out, or to resolve to set out upon the strait path of life, who never persevere to reach the issue-never really converted by the Spirit, never really giving themselves to Christ, nor depending upon the divine guidance, they perish by the way." Samuel Mather "The Gospel of the Old Testament" pp. 141,142

[Typos "The Typological Interpretation of the Old Testament in the New" by Leonhard Goppelt cf. pp. 170-175 'God's Rule Over Israel As A Type That Warns And Strengthens The Church']

Themes in the Book of Joshua

1. the encouragement of Yahweh's presence

2. God can fulfill His promises without Moses-man

3. Yahweh manifested His power at the right moment-at the right time-Yahweh likes to show His might at the moment of His people's greatest weakness. Yahweh brings His people to a place where they can do nothing so He can show His mighty power

4. Unbelief does not have the power to prevent God from fulfilling His covenant promises

5. Obedience to God continues His presence among us

6. It ought to be the supreme concern of the people of God to have God in their midst

7. God is faithful to fulfill His promises-for example the land of Canaan-Yahweh's gift the land but the Israelities are to go up and possess it. Faith and Obedience-human responsiblity

8. Yahweh is faithful to His mercy and His chasitement we are to respond to God's faithfulness by being faithful.
