glorycloud's Diaryland Diary

His cross is my glory

It is 1:48 PM Friday afternoon here in West Michigan. It is a cold gray rainy day. It has been predicted to get warmer next week.

I got up this morning around 7:30 AM. When I got up Carol was dressed and ready to go. She left this morning to shop for groceries. While she was gone I wrote in my paper diary and read. Carol got home around 9:10 AM and I helped her bring in the groceries. I left to go to the Book Nook around 9:30 AM.

Today the Book Nook was slow so I sat and read some more of the novel, 'The Fortress Of Solitude' by Jonathan Lethem till Carol showed up around 1 o'clock PM to do her volunteer shift. I came home from the Book Nook and ate lunch and wrote in my paper dairy. In the mail today I received a book I had ordered titled, 'Radical By Nature: The Revolutionary Life of Alfred Russel Wallace' biography by James T. Costa.

Last night I read late into the night from these books-

'The Meditations with a Monastic Commentary' William of Saint-Thierry Translation and Commentary by Thomas X. Davis

'A Theology Of The Christian Life' by Christopher R. J. Holmes

'The Atmosphere of Heaven: The Unnatural Experiments Of Dr. Beddoes And His Sons Of Genius' biography by Mike Jay

This morning while Carol was gone I read from a book titled, 'Justification by Faith Alone-Selected Writings of Theodore Beza (1519-1605), Amandus Polanus (1561-1610), and Francis Turretin (1623-1637)' Translated by Casey Carmichael Introduced by Zachary Purris.

I try to read along with Roman Catholic theology Reformed Theology. I am a Calvinist and not a Roman Catholic.

I might read some more of my new Reformation Commentary titled, 'Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Songs' Old Testament IX [Reformation Commentary On Scripture] Edited By David C. Fink. I read some this commentary on Proverbs last night.

I am falling asleep so I will close to feel wasted. Tomorrow is a Saturday. This morning my wife and I opened up Anniversary cards, we have been married 44 years. Where have the years gone?

Beneath the cross of Jesus
I fain would take my stand—
The shadow of a mighty rock
Within a weary land—
A home within the wilderness,
A rest upon the way,
From the burning of the noontide heat,
And the burden of the day.

O safe and happy shelter!
O refuge tried and sweet!
O trysting place where Heaven’s love
And Heaven’s justice meet!
As to the exiled patriarch
That wondrous dream was giv’n,
So seems my Savior’s cross to me—
A ladder up to Heav’n!

There lies beneath its shadow
But on the further side,
The darkness of an open grave
That gapes both deep and wide;
And there, between us, stands the cross
Two arms outstretched to save,
Like a watchman set to guard the way
From that eternal grave.

Upon that cross of Jesus
Mine eye at times can see
The very dying form of One
Who suffered there for me.
And from my stricken heart, with tears,
Two wonders I confess—
The wonders of redeeming love,
And my own worthlessness.

I take, O cross, thy shadow
For my abiding place;
I ask no other sunshine
Than the sunshine of His face;
Content to let the world go by,
To know no gain nor loss—
My sinful self my only shame,
My glory all, the cross!
