purgation is thus followed by spiritual illumination

"We can take this farther-the physical sun's rays stand steadily at a [shuttered] window, without receding or reflecting their natural goodness back upon the sun. When the window's shutter's are opened, the sun illuminates the formerly darkened room. So too the heavenly city's true Sun of Righteousness (of which the physical sun provides a dark image or resemblance) steadily stands in readiness at the heart's door, looking forward to nothing else, until some sort of cleansing clears enough away to create an opening. Then the Spiritual Sun can joyously rest in the human spirit as if on a bridal bed, sealing the soul betrothed to him with splendid rays of spiritual realities. Purgation is thus followed by spiritual illumination, not only from the perspective of the recipient but also from that of the incoming rays" Hugh of Balma
