union of the intellect with God

"you have set on his head" that is, in his intellect, which is the supreme power of the soul according to Thomas Aquinas, "a crown", that is the essential reward, which theologians call the crown, namely, the vision of the divine essence; and this crown "you have set on his head of precious stones", that is, union of the intellect with God that this happiness is caused in him. So the crown of the saints [in heaven] is "of precious stones", not from any material cause, but from a final or efficient cause; for the sublime and blessed God is both the one who effects and who is the end of all the happiness of creatures. With this crown one is not crowned, "except he strive lawfully" (2 Tim. 2:5) and he serve God with a pure heart. For this crown makes us similar to the perfect God, or it makes us deiform, in that way that we read with John: "Dearly beloved, we are now the sons of God; and it has not yet appeared what we shall be. We know, that when he shall appear, we shall be like to him: because we shall see him as he is" 1 John 3:2. pg.369, 370 Denis The Carthusian: Commentary on the Psalms: Volume 1.
