Non-Fiction Book Tag

The Non-Fiction Book Tag

1. What subject or area of non-fiction did you begin with? Was it History, Biography, Science, Economics, Archaeology, Anthropology, Math etc, etc? Was there a specific event, person or book that set you on your path? I am a student of the Bible. I became a Christian when I was 18 years old and have studied and read the Bible going on 50 years. The Bible got me on the path of reading nonfiction books like Christian Spirituality, Reformed Theology, New Testament Theology etc. . .

2. Where did you get your first books from to feed your new passion – was it a Library, borrow from friends/family or purchasing? Did you have any guidance from anyone? When I became a Christian I had already a Bible and did not have to borrow one from anyone. In the early days of my Christian life I struggled alone in my new found Christian Faith.

3. Is your first love still the love of your non-fiction reading life or was it a gateway to other subject(s) that took over as number one? After 50 years as a Christian my first love has not changed, I still love reading and studying the Bible.

4. Did you pursue any of your interests with formal education at University level? If so, what level did you finish and was it the experience you had hoped for and expected? Have you made it your profession? In my love for God's Word I attended Bible College ( Bachelor of Arts Degree in Christian Education and Missions) and then attended Reformed Theological Seminary M.Div. (Masters of Divinity Degree Theology and Church History).

5. If you have maintained that first interest all of your life do you feel you should have pursued other interest or subjects? Yes I have maintained my interest in the Bible. But I also have expanded my interests in other subjects like History, Art, Music, etc. . . I also read fiction.

6. Are you now a specialist and read only within one area of non-fiction or do you branch out? Do you read fiction? If so, what genre do you turn to when you want something lighter/different to read? I consider myself a Teaching Elder in the Body of Christ. I am a trained Soul Doctor. I am a theologian and an evangelist. If want something light to read I might read a novel, an essay, or a biography. I also read literary criticism and books on Modernism etc. . .

7. If you are a specialist or not do you prefer academic studies, general works or scholarly but not overly academic? I prefer academic biblical or theological studies, but also some general Christian works. I do not read overly academic books.

8. Do you collect books in your area of interest(s),or do you read and pass the books on/sell or borrow almost exclusively from a library? If you do collect do you prefer hard cover or paperback? – Do they need to be first editions and in fine condition or are you happy with an ex-library copy and/or underlining in them? I have a very large Christian library along with a large secular library. I built my library to be a teaching library/Bible.

9. Do you read/collect exclusively newer publications or do you enjoy reading what writers had to say on your subject in the past as well? What is the oldest book you have (either original edition or a reprint of an older work)? I collect old and new books. I have collected for example over the years classical 17th century English Puritan works like the works of William Perkins, Thomas Manton, and Thomas Goodwin.

10. What was the most you have ever paid for a book in your main area of interest? Was it new or used? I have spent maybe $60.00 for a book. Recently I have been buying as they are published the Works of William Perkins. Each volume goes for $50.00 dollars a volume and thus far I have nine volumes.

11. Tag away.
