My wife has come home from work and gone to bed for the day. I have been sitting in our dining room reading my Reformation Commentary On Scripture on The Gospel of John chapter 1 through 12. I found this interesting comment on John 1:14c "we have seen His glory" that I want to share. "Evidence Of His Glory. Heinrich Bullinger: The apostle takes great care lest the Word of God be made vile because of its assumption of humanity. Therefore, by a kind of antithesis he opposes the weakness of the flesh with the divine glory. It is as if he is saying, "You have heard that the Word of God dwelt among us and was made similar to us in every way, excepting sin. But let no one hold the incarnate Word in contempt. For the same one who was exposed to abuse was also a partaker of divine glory, not as an honor but by his nature." To establish more authority, he adds kai etheasametha;we have seen him, not just in passing, but we have carefully considered, we have observed, and we have examined his glory. In his epistle to the apostle says the same thing: "That which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon and our hands have handled, that we announce to you. The apostle Peter also says, "Not by following artificial fables have we made known to you the power and advent of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we observed with our eyes his majesty. For he received from God the Father honor and glory, the voice coming down to him from the excellent glory, "This is my beloved son."" Therefore, glory is the divine majesty which revealed itself in the incarnate Word through miracles, through life-giving teaching, through death, through resurrection and ascension into heaven and through the miraculous sending of the Holy Spirit, but especially in that wondrous manifestation, when both at the Jordan and on Mount Tabor he was shown by a clear revelation from heaven to be the very Son of God. Thus, an interpretation is added here, "The glory as of the only begotten of the Father." And this means, "We have observed his glory, and not just any glory, but the glory exhibited by the Father, which makes him truly known as the only and natural Son of God. Moreover, the particle hos does not indicate similarity here but the exhibited appearance of truth. . ."
