glorycloud's Diaryland Diary

the tongue is a fire

The first day goes by thus far normal. I have been reading my diary from June 2005. My life basically never changes. I am just getting older as the river of time flows by.

Last night Carol and I went to bed around 11 o'clock PM. I read before going to sleep "John James Audubon: The Making Of An American" a biography by Richard Rhodes.

there was no music

I cleared off my desk of books, but left these books on my desk to remind me I have a mind that is somewhat alive to the world of thought---

"John James Audubon: The Making Of An American" a biography by Richard Rhodes

"Dreamland" a novel by Kevin Baker

"The Harvest Of Mysticism In Medieval Germany (1300-1500)" Vol. IV of The Presence of God: A History of Western Mysticism by Bernard McGinn

"Carthusian Spirituality: The Writings Of Hugh of Balma And Guigo De Ponte" [The Classics of Western Spirituality]

"An Infinity Of Little Hours" Five Young Men And Their Trial Of Faith In The Western World's Most Austere Monastic Order by Nancy Klein Maguire

"Bob Dylan: The Essential Interviews" edited by Jonathan Cott

"The Spiritual Writings of Denis the Carthusian" Translated into English by Ide M. Ni Riain

"Job" Ancient Christian Commentary On Scripture/ Old Testament VI Edited By Manlio Simonetti And Marco Conti

I am not sure what I will read this week? I have a ton of stuff on my mind these days. I like to go through my days lost in thought. I am not really into talking. I am not into small talk. What comes to my memory right now is chapter three of the Epistle of James---

"1: My brethren, be not many masters, knowing that we shall receive the greater condemnation.
2: For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body.
3: Behold, we put bits in the horses' mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body.
4: Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
5: Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!
6: And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire of hell.
7: For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed of mankind:
8: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
9: Therewith bless we God, even the Father; and therewith curse we men, which are made after the similitude of God.
10: Out of the same mouth proceedeth blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.
11: Doth a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter?
12: Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh.
13: Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.
14: But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth.
15: This wisdom descendeth not from above, but is earthly, sensual, devilish.
16: For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work.
17: But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.
18: And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace." James 3:1-18

Our words should be few. Why waste our words on people who do not care to hear us? From what I have gathered living among people, is that they are lost in their own selves. People have lost the art of listening to those outside themselves. All people want to hear is themselves and not the words of others. What people really do not want to hear is the Word of God. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it" John 1:1-5

Carol is home from church. I will close to look at her before she goes to bed for the day.

"No one has seen God at any time. The only begotten Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him" JN 1:18
